Parish Council - Planning Committee

What we do
The planning Committee meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month.  We review and comment on planning applications submitted to Mid Devon District Council from the villsge and, on occasions, the surrounding areas if they will have an impact on the village.  If we have concerns about an application we will submit our objections to MDDC to be included in their considerations.

The planning process
Normally the decision on an application is delegated to a planning officer within MDDC and he/she will take into consideration our views as well as other views represented.  If the planning application is likely to be controversial it can be "called in" which eans it will go before the MDDC Planning Committee with an officer recommendation.  The Parish Council is allowed to attend the meeting and speak to the Committe for a (very) limited time to voice our concerns.

Public participation
Our Planning meetings are advertised and are open to the public.  We listen to public concerns before we consider the application.  Any member of the public  can object to a proposed development in writing to MDDC.  The letters are graded as objection, neutral or support. and a count of each category is noted on the Planning web site.  Members of the public may attend the MDDC Planning Meetings and one short time slot is allowed for a representative of the objectors to speak to the committee.

Information availability
Planning meetings are advertised on village notice boards and on this web site.  We publish a list of applications on this web site which are being considered by the Parish Council and also the list of applictions being considered by MDDC for our area.  We include links to the MDDC Planning Portal to make it easy for residents to see details of applications.

Other planning activities
The planning committe are involved in various aspects of the Parish Plan and the Local Development Framework, a long range plan developed by MDDC in consultation with Town and Parish Councils.  This includes areas allocated for development and the need for affordable housing.  We also work with Devon County Council to ensure that our roads and street lighting are kept working and in good condition.
